JOY OUTSIDE THE GROCERY STORE
Sometimes the opportunity is just waiting for you outside of a grocery store and all you have to do is walk up to it. That is what happened this morning when I walked up to the Giant Food grocery store in Derwood, Maryland.
Positioned outside the store were three ladies sitting behind a table. It was like they were grown-up girl scouts but there were no cookies around.
My First Clue at the Grocery Store
The word “Praise” on one of their signs popped out at me as I walked up to them. Consequently, I imagined this was a religious activity of some kind.
I was right. It was the Healing Yourself Outreach Program, sponsored by a church in Rockville, Maryland. I gave them a $5 contribution. They buy food with it then give it away to the needy.
I explained I had some cards in my truck that I wanted to give them afterwards. So I came out a few minutes later from the grocery store and made my way to my truck. I grabbed three Articles of Faith cards and three of my public affairs cards. I gave those to the ladies. They appreciated it.
I explained every fall we look for a congregation to partner with in serving the community. They liked that idea.
Summary
It’s easy to make friends with religious people who are busy serving others. By having the cards in my truck I was able to give them out quickly. There is no way you can prepare for this type of interaction, other than having the cards with you close by.
Opportunities to enlighten people about the Church are all around us. They can even happen when you go to the grocery store!
